HAWERA.
(from our own correspondent.) Nov. 20. The Pinafore Opera Company paid us a visit on Friday last, and stayed until Monday,- but were rather unfortunate, having very poor houses on the last two nights. A Cavalry cricket team visited Opuuake on Saturday last, and played against the Armed Constabulary men. The Cavalry proved too strong, and beat their opponents by 7 wickets. In the morning, a rifle match was fired by seven men from the two cricketing teams. The Opunake men were victorious by 40 points. The frost on Sunday morning has plaj'ed sad havoc amongst the' “ spuds,” whole'
plantations of them being cut down. The Maoris have commenced digging their potatoes ; a kit of very fine ones was brought to town the other day. Talking about Maoris, a fishing party came back yesterday, with three large sharks and a lot of smaller fish. The largest of the former must have been fully sis foot long. A Debating Society has again been formed in this town, to be carried on under Parliamentary rules. A leader was elected, who forme J his committee, and on Tuesday evening they laid on the table a subject for debate. _ Perhaps it was on account of there being so many of the fair ses present, or the members might have been tongue-tied, for they allowed the first debate to lapse with only one speech. The second one created a little more life, and had to be adjourned until next meeting. I hope that this Society will not fall to the ground as soon as the novelty wears off, like the last one that was formed here, as the objects of course are both instructive and amusing.
Messrs Whittaker Bros, have proved that they are not to be daunted by the bad times, as they are putting up a building that will rank, if not first, the next best bujlding in the town. Tait, the photographer, has. an.ived, and will be here for about a fortnight, so I should advise those who want to have their pictures taken to give him an early call.
