HAWERA.
(from our own correspondent.) The Bazaar in aid of the Hawera Institute on Friday last was decidedly a success, the amount realised being over £l2O. It must be a source of gratification to those ladies who assisted that their efforts were so successful. The hearty thanks of the public as well as the Committee are due to them, as the object is one of great benefit to everybody. All the goods that were not sold dy 9 o’clock on Saturdy evening, were put. up by auction and sold, not a thing being left, excepting the chairs, forms, &c., and those being the property of the Hall Company, wqichit was thought advisable not to sell. The Committee desire to express their thanks to the members of the Hawera Brass Band who discoursed sweet music on both overlings, and added very much to the enjoyment. The Cavalry finished their weeks drill on Saturday, the majority thanking the pigs that they had not another week to do. On Tuesday the 21st the election of a Captain took place, our First Lieutenant was elected, and 1 have to congratulate Captain Lukis and the Troop, there not being the least doubt that they could have elected a gentleman more universally liked or looked up to, not only by the Troop, but by everybody that has the pleasure of his acquaintance. Mr F, Riddiford was elected First Lieutenant and Mr Johnston, of Normanby, second Lieutenant. The first cricket match of this season was played on Tuesday last, between the
Hawera Club anti an eleven picked from the Armed Constabulary captained by Major Goring. The Captains having tossed, and Mr Riddiford winning he decided to put the visitors in first, who managed to knock up 62. Webb playing a good steady innings for his 20. Hawera then went to the wickets, but had to retire for the small score of 38, Mr Riddiford being the only man who obtained double figures. Connell’s bowling was very effective, taking three wickets in one over, his. bowling average being 11 overs, 19 runs, and 7 wickets. At a qnarter.-past one the A.C.’s again took the willow, Major. Goring playing very steadily for, his 17. Smith had a lucky innings for 28, being missed once or twice in the field, the innings closed for 99, leaving Hawera 124 runs to win Messrs Riddiford and Bereaford first went to the wickets, but the latter retired almost immediately being run out. The faces of the Hawera’s looked very long at this as he is their best bat, however, Cunningham joined the Captain, and they knocked the bowing about, until Cunningham retired to a ball of Morrison’s. Farrington then joined Riddiford, and they commenced in real earnest, knocking the bowling everewhave until Riddiford (who had been missed once or twice before) skied one of Smith’s into Knight’s hands, his score being 41. Johnston thr-n joined Farrington, and they staj ed together until the match was won. Mr Farrington playing a faultless innings for 43, and Johnston carefully putting together 12. The Hawera’s thus won by 7 wickets. The A.C.’s. fielded far better than the homo team, which at times was very loose.
