PARLIAMENTARY.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. October 28. The report of the Christchurch election petition being brought up, Tole, Hislop, and Sir George Grey raised a number of objections 'against its being received, chiefly on the ground that the proceedings were irregular. It was ultimately carried on the voices that the report be .entcied on the Journals of the House. Upon the writ being produced, and Mr Richardson’s name being substituted for Sir George Grey’s, Sir George Grey protested against 1,350 electors being thus disfranchised. He was overruled by Speaker. Sir George then moved the adjournment of the House. The Speaker said the new member must bo sworn in first. Sir Gsorge Grey raised other objections, but the Speaker ruled, as the report had been adopted, Sir George Grey out of order, Mr Shrimski gave notice to ask whether the Agent-General's services had beon
dispensed with, and who would be his successor. The result of the motion to produce corrsspomJence relating to votes of certain Auckland members, was a reply from the Secretary (Cooper), stating that no such correspondence was on record. Sir G. Grey characterised this as an evasion, anil a: tempted to make more work for committee to take evidence on oath; and enquire into matter. The Premier said this was an absurdity; and meant inquiring into private conversations and arguments to induce members to give their votes in certain directions. Mr Swanson said he wrote a document and promised to show it to several, bnf when tin: paper came hack it was marked confidential ; hut for that he would show it. He was not ashamed of anything it contained. A flea! of rot was talked about ic. 'i’Jjey knew all tjio vv>tes must be passed by the Mouse. Members did not come there to look into pockets. No resolution of the House would compel him to produce it. Discussion proceedcl till hour of rising, all the Opposition speakers condemning id strongest tends the action of Government and four Auckland member. Government side defending Aucklanders.
