At a meeting of the Committee of the Patea Institute last week, it was decided to open the reading room on Suncays, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. By reference to our advertising Columns, it will be seen that the gate* booths, &c., of the forthcoming Patea Races, will be sold by Mr Cowern, at his Warehouse) on Saturday next. The cricket match on Saturday last—Eleven v. Eighteen—resulted in favor of the former by over 20 runs. General entries for the Patea District Jockey Club Spring Meeting, to be run on the 30th and Slat instant, will be received up to 8 p.m. on Satutday next. Entries to be sealed and addressed to the Hon Sectetary, with entrance money and qualification tee enclosed ;• also the name, age, and pedegreo of horse, and the name of owner and color of rider. Acceptances for Flying Handicap and P.D.J.C. Handicap must be made same night; also Derby Sweep, Kakaramea Rifles will parade for inspection at 2.30 p.m. to-morrow. Nos. 1 and 2 Companies Hawera Rifles at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Messrs Gower & : Cochemists and druggists, have arrived in Carlyle, and any persons seeking a “ bine pill and a black draught” will find Mr Gower only too happy to supply their wants. The shop under Mr Warren’s photographic studio has been fitted up for the business, and from the array of bottles and other articles on the shelves, wo should imagine the new arrivals had a plentiful stock. “ Competition is the soul of business,” and we wish Messrs Gower & Co. every success. We would remind readers that the Bazaar in aid of the Hawera Institute will be opened on Friday nest, at the Towrt Hall. Although times are bad, we have no doubt that such a worthy object will be well patronised, and wo trust to see such sums realised on the two days of the bazaar (Friday and Saturday) that will greatly assist in paying off the debt on the building. We have been requested to ask contributors to forward goods not later flmn flnn nffopnnnn, "o flfj tn ST ivp. time for classification. The Hawera Brass Band will be in attendance, and will no doubt greatly enliven the proceedings.
The following nominations were received by the Waverlcy-Waitotara Racing Club, on Monday night, but may be still further increased by letters posted and bearing the date of closing :—Flying Handicap : Banshee (late Expectation), Balmoral (late Standard Bearer), Harlequin, Queen of the Vale, Flora McDonald, Orlando, Tricotrin, Hanlon (late Princess Maudocolt), Tamuri, Lapland, and Otawa. Waverloy-Waito-tara Handicap: Balmoral, Loclilo'mond, Gladlola, Maid of Honor, Tamuri,_ Tricotrin, Foam, Flora McDonald, Hailstorm, Otawa, Wilberforce. Handicap Hurdles ; Grey Momus, Arohoa. Weights will be declared on the 12th November.
The Wellington correspondent of ths Taranaki Herald says : —There is no hope of an immediate settlement of the deadlock arrived at, and there is some talk of it ending in a dissolution.
A meeting of the School Teachers of this pa'-t of the Wanganui district, was held at Kakaramea on Saturday, the 18th instant. Present—Messrs Brown, Dyer, Lloyd, Mair, Scott, and Weiss. Mr Dyer informed those present that he had convened the meeting at the request of the Secretary of the Wanganui Teachers’Association, to consider if it would be well to form a branch of that Institution here. A resolution was passed favorable to formation, but reserving tho right of modifying the rules. Mr Dyer was elected to the chair, and Mr Weiss to the Secretaryship. It was decided that the teachers meet again that day four weeks.
