TARANAKI WASTE LANDS BOARD.
At the meeting' of the above Board, held at Now Plymouth on’ Monday iast, tbe'Chairman said lie liad received inl'or-’ mation that a person named Winks wastrespassing on the Wiimate Plains by’ depasturing cattle there.' This person' had been previously convicted of a similar offence. He thought tint:, at the present time, it was- important that Europeans; should be warned against the occupation of the Plains. On the fanner occasion, when Winks was summoned-for trespass, he (the Commissioner)'hall caused-the cattle to be imprisoned so as to identify the owner ;■ but in the present case he bad not done so, as he considered it was unnecessary, the ownership of the cattle being established--beyond all doubt. Mania, a native who-’ had been against the prosecution in the previous case, would mow be a witness for the prosecution, and .would prove the ownership of the cattle.—lt was moved by .Mr Syme, seconded by Mr Crompton, and' carried, “ That the Commissioner be an-' thorised to take action against John Winks for having knowingly and wilfully depastured cattle on the Waimate Plains.” Mr Blandish asked if the Government had given any notification of the appointment of a custodian of plans, &c, at Hawera —>'i'he Commissioner replied- in the negative.—Mr Standisli suggested that wherr the appointment was’ made it would be advisable to supply the officer with formsof application, which was agreed to. Mr Blandish moved, and Air Symo seconded, -‘ That licenses be issued to each’ of the following persons to hold the lands referred to in their respective applications, upon terms and conditions to be endorsed upon each license, in accordance with the Act: —
A letter was read from the Chairman of the Hawera Hoad Board, stating that the Hoad Board had resolved to let the following contracts, subject to the approval of the Land Board Thomas Twigg, £96, Central Allen Road ; John West, £SOO, ditto. He also stated that the Ratea County Council had voted £3OO to bo spent on the Allen Road, thus leaving a balance of about £3OO to be expended out of the deferred payment moneys.—lt was decided to refer back to the Road Board,, desiring them to show precisely the different parts of the road the Road Board intends to make, A letter was read from Messrs West,Allen, and Giles, asking the Board to reconsider and rescind the resolution allowing Messrs Gane Bros, extension of time for the payment of the instalrnen due on deferred-payment lands at Whakamara. They considered Messrs Gane Bros did not labour under greater difficulties and disadvantages'than their neighbours, andthey could not understand why favour should be shown, to them by the Board.— >
J4> Standisb said M a ssr.s Gane Bios, in ! .applied ro the Board ior au extension 'of timo, and had gi.vcii very satisfactory reasons for So.aiding. It' tins other selectors wished to obtain a similar favour, they 'should apply to the Board, and give as satisfactory reasons as Messrs (Jane Bros, and they would doubtless have the saihe privilege extended to them. Messrs Gaue Bros, had paid an exceedingly high rate for the purchase of their land, much higher than any of the other selectors. He also pointed out that the money due from Messrs Gane Bros, would be available as soon as it would bo possibleto improve the roads, and the other Selectors could not possibly be put to any disadvantage through the Board granting to Messrs Gane Bros, extension of time for paj-mont of instalments—The Secretary was instructed to reply thht the Board failed to see any .reasons for rescinding the previous resolution of the Board . An application from Mr Smith to purchase land in the Patea District, had been received by the Board, and was at the previous meeting of the Board referred to Major Brown, in order to ascertain whether native fishing reserves were intended to be set apart in the locality.— Major Brown now informed the Board that the matter was under consideration, requested Hie Board to take ho further in the ihattter until he informed them what bad been decided upon. A letter was read from Messrs Southey and Willie applying for 500 acres of land at Mungawfiero to be used for Sawmill purposes. In proof'of the bona tides of their application, they stated that they had purchased machinery to the amount of -£7 DO.—Mr Standisb moved, That 200 acres of land at Mfthgawhero be surveyed for lets.■ to Messrs Southey ahd Willie for sawmill purposes, under section 90 of the Land Act ; that the Commissioner and Banger bo appointed to consider terms of lease ; and that 300 acres be surveyed if6r 'sale on deferred payment.”— Herald.
