SOUR GRAPES.
Thu Wanganui Herald of Wednesday last, speaking of the Kail Ministry, says ; “ That Mr Bryce should take office with such a Ministry will surprise both friends and foes, although his adherence to the new Government adds materially to its strength. Mr. Bryce, from his experience as chairman of the Native Affairs Committee, is perhaps better qualified for the post of Native Minister than' any other member of the victorious party, and if by any chance the new Ministry should exist, we think the Native Department will benefit by the change proposed to be made. But the Hall Ministry will, doubtless, have a shorter tenure of office than the Stafford party had in 1872 ; and there* fore it is futile to discuss the strength of a Government that will but move across the public stage. The Liberal party are united j their very compactness inviting adherents from that “ fortuitous concourse of atoms ” hungrily waiting for the loaves and fishes of office 5 and, should the rumour, that Sir George Grey will stand aside, prove correct, the return of a Liberal Ministry to power becomes oidy a question of a few weeks, or even less."
