At the last meeting of the above Board, held on the 29th September, the following matters relating to this County were dealt with, which we dip from the Herald :— A letter was read from-Captain Wra} l -, in charge of the Land Office at Patea, stating that section 331, which had been applied for by Inspector Bullen as a site for a police station at Kakaramea, was required for immigration purposes, and that a cottage had been erected on the ground, and the section fenced id. The letter also pointed out tbit there were no police stationed at Kakaramea at the present time. Sections 204 or 273 would be available for the purpose.—lt was decided to write to the Inspector, and ask him to notify to the Board which of the two sections available he would prefer. A letter was read from Mr R. W. Foreman, on behalf of the settlers at Manntahi, objecting to the block-house reserve being set apart as a site for a police station, and for the purpose of grazing Government horses. At a meeting of the settlers of
Matmfahi, it was decided that the chairman of the meeting should write to the Land Board, ar.d acquaint its members with the facts comiectci! with the block-house being used by the settieis as u public hall, ami for the purpose of carrying on religions services. The letter stated that Major Turner had, in 18“4, set apart the blockhouse for the use of settlors of ’he Manntahi District lor conducting (heir public meetings, &c„ and that, on the strength of this dedication, the settlers had gone to considerable expense in maintaining the block-house ; therefore they were of opinion that it would he unjust to take ilie use of the block-house from them. They were also deaiious of obtaining the reserve as a recreation ground, ami wished to have the ground, or a portion of it, vested in local trustees. 'l’hey’ did not object to Inspector Bullen obtaining the use of three acres of land, and the remainder to ba vested in trustees as a recreation ground.— The consideration of the letter was deferred for a week in order that the Chief Surveyor should report upon the same, afld that Inspector Bullen should have an opportunity of laying the mutter more fully before lha Board. A letter was read from Mr D. Smith, requesting the Board to lease the waste land of the ground abutting on aevtj/fag, 50, 51, 52, 53, and 54, in toe suburbs oF~ Carlyle. A memorandum was endorsed upon the letter by the officer in charge at Carlyle stating that this strip of ground was a bone of contention among the owners abd. t occupiers of ’adjoining’lands, uiid recommending that the ground should he offered, for sale dr lease. The land was nearly’ all’ a sand hill, aitd it was doubtful wether’ it was not required for a native fishing. reserve. —The secretary was instructed to write to Major Brown, asking if the natives required a fishing station in this locality. A memorandum was read from the General Crown Lunds Office, saating that a cheque for £139 13s Gd had been sent to the Patea West Hoad Hoard, being amount due to that body for land sold on deferred payment. Tho writer stated that he had conferred with the other settlers in the district, and they had decided to accept the offer made by the Board. They desired, before commencing tile work, that the Ranger should be requested to draw up specifications, and make a valuation of the work, so that the settlers might know the amount of compensation they' would he entitled to. —• The Secretary’ was instructed to write to the settlers, stating that, if tbey’ chose to do the work on the. risk of the money being voted by Parliament, the Range would be sent out to draw up specifications.
