NORMANBY.
(FROM OOR OWN CORRESPONDENT.); October 1. A public meeting, which was numerously attended, was held at Brett’s on Monday evening, to consider the statements lately made by the correspondent of the N.Z. Times, reflecting on the Normanby Postmaster.
The chair was occupied by Mr E. 0. Gribson, who read the notice convening the meeting. : Mr F. Brett moved the following resolution, which was seconded by Mr Gillespie, and carried unanimously, “ That in the- opinion of this meeting, the statements made by the correspondent of the N.Z. Times reflecting on the local Postmaster, are utterly without foundation, and are calculated to seriously injure the character of the gentleman referred to; this meeting considers that all matters connected with the Post Office have been carried on in a most satisfactory and obliging manner by Mr Beresford, and desires to convey to that gentleman its feelings of sympathy under this most unwarrantable and unjustifiable attack ; this meeting desires to record its feelings of disapprobation, and severely censures the conduct of the N.Z, Times correspondent.” . , Mr- Beresforfl briefly thanked the meeting ibr of good feeling towards himself. He bad always endeavoured to give satisfaction^' and while
employed as Postmaster, such would continually be his aim. Mr Bright Well wished to bring before the . meeting the question of the salary allowed Mr BereSford. He understood that Mr Beresford had been offered the handsome sum of five shillings a quarter, which he had declined to accept. He considered this sum ridiculous, and thought that the. authorities should be urged to recognise the Postmaster’s ser- .. vices in a more substantial manner. Mr Brightwell then read a resolution to that effect, but the chairman ruled that he could not accept of it, as it was foreign to the particular purpose for which the meeting was called. The feeling of the meeting was evidently with Mr Brightwell, his intended resolution being heard with applause.
A vote of thanks to the Chairman eloacd the proceedings.
