CARLYLE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.

TitK entertainment in aid of the above Church came off on Thursday evening,, in the Town Hall. The night was very fine, which resulted, in the house being crowded in every part, even a few Maoris being noticed amongst the audience. The programme was of a. varied character, and being somewhat lengthy, was not com (dried ti 1 nearly twelve o’clock. The Carlyle Harmonic Society, under the leadership of .Mr Torment, very kindly gave their services lor the occasion, and no doubt the success of the entertainment is mainly due to their exertions.

The flirt part of the programme wap executed exclusively by the members of me Society, commencing - witii an overture, “Caliph of Bagdad,” by the piano, 'iolin, and picdo, wbieli was done justice to by the-performers, and received loud applause at the finish; followed by “The carnovale,” a very appropriate chorus for the occasion. “ Mary of Argyll,” song, by a gentleman, was given with effect. “The Bells of St. Michael’s tower,” trio by ladies and gentleman, was well received. The next item on the programme was “ The Sexton,” but owing to the “ unavoidable presence ” of the gentleman who was to sing it, the song, “ A heart bowed down,” was substituted by another gentleman ; followed by (be telling chorus, “ Awake I ZEuSian Lyre," which took immensely, A duett by ladies, “ I’ve wandered in dreams,” brought forth a storm of applause ; followed by “ Ruby,” song by a gentleman, which was so well rendered, that an encore was demanded, for which “ The King’ B Highway" was given. “ Life’s a bumper,” trio by gentlemen, received applause ; followed by “ The Nightingale’s trill,” song, by a lady, which, at its finish, was so loudly' ,c > red” that the lady had to re-appear. Th 3 first part concluded with the chorus, Comrades in arms,” which, as usual, was d one full justice to by the Society. The second part commenced with an overture on the piano, by a young lady of wellknown musical ability, and the applause received at the conclusion of the piece showed that “music still hath charms to soothetho savage breast,” A reading from “ Oliver Twist” was next given ; followed by a comic song by a gentleman, “ Bibbidv bob,” given in real style, for which the singer was loudly encored,-and-he favored the nunience with another song equally as good. “ The Gladiator,” recitation by a gentleman, was exceedingly well given, and was duly appreciated. A violin .and flute duett followed, and we can only say that the two performers received their usual round of applause. Next came a reading by a gentleman, which was short and. to the point; followed by “Nancy Lee,” song by a well-known Carlyle singer, for which a hearty encore was accorded, when the “ White Squall" was given with effect, “The Mummy,” recitation by a gentleman, would no 'doubt hav« taken well, but it was not given in a sufficiently loud voice to be beard at the back of the Hal ; , therefore it was not appreciated. A violin solo, “ The last, rpse of summer,” exceedingly well rendered, and two Irish song-’, brought the second part to a close.

Rev Mr Torry here rose, and in a short speech thank-d. all those present for the mai n;r in which they had responded to the call of the Presbyterians of Carlyle. He also moved a vote of thanks to the Carlyle Harmonic Society' for iheir kind assistance, as also to all the other ladies and gentlemen who had assisted at the entertainment.

The evening’s' amusement concluded with a short sketch of N j gro life, entitled, “ The Dead Alive,” which caused a great deal of laughter.
