PATEA COUNTY COUNCIL.

Tim monthly meeting of the above body was held on Wednesday last. Present— Messrs McGuire (chairman), Hunter, Gane, Horner. Milne, Dale, and Brewer. Minutes of previous meeting read and confirmed. Correspondence included —Letter from Chairman Wairoa Highway Board, asking the Council if they intended to comply with request of Board, re grant of £3OO for Momahakl Block ; for A. Thomson, applying for compensation for being discharged from road works ; from J. McLean’s solicitors, Wellington,'cl aiming £662 10a for works done on Mountain Road, otherwise legal proceedings would bo taken ; from Dudley and Robinson, Waver!ey, complaining that Foreman of Works would not take over works which had been completed ; from Hawera Town Board, asking what steps were necessary to be taken to have the footpaths of that township gazetted ; from A. Tonrner, Stratford, complaining of a ditch in front of his telegram from telegraphist, Hawera, asking how many chains of bush felling on Mountain Road Mr McLean had been paid for by the Council; telegram from Under Secretary stating that £6OO had been sent forward to the Treasury for payment, leaving a balance of £257 still in Councils favor ; letter from R. B. Hamilton, Manntabi, objecting to the proposed expenditure of the Patea West Road Board ; telegram from cashier of Treasury stating that £6OO had been placed to the credit of County fund, for bush felling ; letter from A. Schultzc, asking for a rebate on slaughter house license ; from G. S. Cooper, asking the Council to furnish a statement of accounts for the House for Representatives; telegram from cashier of Treasury, that £315 2s 6d had been placed to credit of County fund, for road works ; letter from G. Rogers, asking the Council to take over small office built by himself at Manawapou ; from several settlers at Whakamara, objecting to proposed expenditure of the Hawera Road Board. Proposed by Mr Gane, seconded by Mr McGuire, and carried, “ That the Foreman of Works, on bis discharging any man in the employ of the Council, give in certificate, to be presented to the Treasurer for payment at once.” Mr Schultzo’s request was complied with.

■ The Chairman was authorised to inspect and pay Mr Rogers a fair value for building erected b}' him at Manawapou. Proposed b}" Mr Hunter, seconded by Mr Gane, and carried, “ That this Council agrees to the proposed expenditure of the Patea West Road Board, as advertised, provided it spends out of the contingencies the sum of £25 extra on the Lower Manulalu Road, commencing at auction 376 and ending at 374.” Proposed by Mr Dale, seconded by Mr Milne, and carried “ That the Hawera Road Board bo requested to forward a correct statement, showing how they propose to expend the funds they will have at their disposal for the ennent year ; ” An amendment by Mr Hunter, seconded by Mr Gane, “That the Council sanction the expenditure as proposed,” was lost. In answer to a request, it was proposed by Mr Dale, seconded by Mr Hunter, and carried, t‘ That Messrs Kennedy and Co. be allowed to gravel 111 chains of road between Choync’s gate and Wavcrley, instead of 51 chains, at the .same price as agreed upon by tender, (ho said 10 chains extra to be done near Obeyue’s gate.” Proposed by Mr Horner, seconded by Mr Dale, and carried, “That the Foreman of Works, accompanied by Councillors Milne and Brewer, inspect Dudley and Co.’s contract at Wavcrley, and take such action as may be expedient for the duo fulfilment of the contract.” The Clerk was instructed to inform Mr Tourner that the matter complained of in his letter should bo inspected and reported upon as early as possible. Surgeons report,read and received ; as also report of Foreman of Works. Proposed by Mr Dale, seconded by Mr Horner, and earrie‘l, “That the sum of £250 bo voted for Hospital purposes.” Mr Milne proposed the motion standing in his name, seconded by Mr Gane, and carried, “ That the Public Works Committee be abolished.” Abstract of receipts and expenditure for August showed —Receipts, £6OO ; expenditure, £783 3s Bd. Accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
