EGMONT ELECTION.

THE POLL. The Egmont Election has been one of great interest to the people of this County, and the supporters of each candidate have *L”io (heir utmost to secure the return of the man of their choice, with what success will be scon below. From tho commencement we had no hope for Mr Sherwood, as lie is not the gentleman, according to our minds, to represent our interests in Parliament, and wo give the majority of tho electors of Egmont credit for having voted for Major Atidnson, who will undoubtedly servo them more faithfully than Mr Sherwood.

Yesterday the town of Carlyle was quite lively, all manner of vehicles being pressed into the service of the candidates, for the purpose of conveying voters to the polling booth. Flags in honor of Mr Sherwood were seen ftying on several buildings, whilst other buildings were decorated with cartoons, showing Mr Sherwood at the head of the poll, and Major Atkinson, with several of his supporters, cutting very sorry figures at the bottom. Groups of men were to be seen dotted about the town, and the cry invariably was, “ Vote for Sherwood.” Various worded posters, printed at the Wanganui Herald , were plastered all over the town—the houses of friend and foe being treated the same way, and we came to the conclusion that every thing was fair in love, war, or electioneering. A trumpeter was also buisly engaged in Mr Sherwood’s cause, but wo endorse the remarks of a friend yesterday, who, on hearing the tones of thee warlike instrument, exclaimed, “ Bless me, Sherwood blows his own trumpet enough, without getting another to help him.” Throughout the day the greatest good feeling was manifested, for which, the electors should be congratulated. The following is the result of the poll :
