POLITICAL GOSSIP.

A Press Agency telegran dated Grahamstow.n, August 28, says:—Mr Rowe, M.H.R., called a meeting of Ins constituents this evening in the Theatre Royal. There were 2000 electors present, and crowding the approaches. A friend of the candidate sought to take the chair amidst whistling and yells, and after some time, and several appeals ineffectually made to the audience for a hearing, the curtain was lowered and the lights dimmed. A painting was then exhibited, showing a

rat, on its back were these words, “Try Grey’s patent vermin killer.” “ A rat, dead for a ducat, dead! ” After further confusion the audience was left to findits way out of the theatre without according Rowe a hearing. Three cheers were given for Sir George Grey, and three groans for Rowe.

Captain Rkeet, candidate for Grey and Bell, met the electors at New Plymouth on Saturday evening last, and was well received. A motion was Carried to the effect that he was a lit and proper person to represent that district in Parliament. Mr Wakefield addressed a large meeting at Geraldine on Saturday last, when a vote of confidence was unanimously carried. Mr G. F. Sherwood has gone to New Plymouth to attend the nomination of candidates.

Reports have been circulated in Carlyle that Mr Fookea intends retiring from the Town of New Plymouth contest in favor of Major Atkinson. We can assure electors that such is not the case.

We take the following extraordinary paragraph from the Wniroa Free Press ; “The Mount Egmont electors have held a meeting, and passed a vote of want of confidence in Major Atkinson—the sitting member. Messrs Sherwood and McGuire are the on!} - candidates at present in the field, either of whom, it is believed, are able to oust the Major.” Mr Bryce met the electors at Wanganui on Wednesday evening last, and received a unanimous vote of confidence.

Major Atkinson addressed the electors in the Town Hall, New Plymouth, on Thursday evening, the room being crowded. A unanimous vote of confidence was passed.
