PATEA COUNTY COUNCIL.
Tnio usual monthly meeting of the above body was held at the Connell Chambers on W ednosday. Present.—Messrs McGuire (chairman), Winchcomb, Brewer. Hunter, Ganc, Partridge, Humor, Milne, and Dale.
Minutes of piovious meeting road and confirmed.
The following letters were read.— Waver ley, 4th August 1879. Sir, —I am instructed by Mr C. Koerfz to bring before your notice that a culvert lias been laid on the Main Road through Wavorley, which, as it carries I lie water from the road directly on to Ids .section. No. 323. in the Township of Wavorley, has put him to considerable inconvenience and loss of time. He in!ends erecting a house on that portion of the section on to which tlie water runs, and has been prevented doing so in consocpienco of the culvert. lam instructed to request that the name be removed forthwith, and further to request that your Council will forward the sum of 10s Gd, being die cost of this letter. —I am, &c., P. Foreman of Works was instructed to see to culvert. The Council would take no further notice of letter.
Ist July, 1879.
Having seen Mr Tregear’s report that timber was used to underlie some of the embankments of road formation in the contracts on Mountain Road between Mangawhero and Stratford, we, tlie undersigned, certify that we have seen portions (several chains at least) in which the earthwork was thus filled in ; also, several very large stumps of trees were used to fill in, and are covered up instead of being removed. Sir, — 1 have the honor to request that the accounts of your Council, for tlie year ended 31st March, 1879, be furnished to this office fur examination and audit. The documents required arc : 1. A detailed statement of accounts, supported by vouchers for each item expended. 2. A balance sheet as per printed form herewith. 8. Coriilicatc of Bank balance. 4. Statement of unpresonted cheques issued prior to the Slat March, 1879. 5. Previous year’s audited balance sheet. —I am &c., R. Macalister, Provincial District Auditor. Secretary Patca County Council, Carlyle. Council declined to forward vouchers. Carlyle, July 11th, 1879. Gentlemen —When Mr Taplin got the contract for supplying the Hospital he came to me and 1 made an arrangement wkh him to supply meat (second class) at, threc-pence-half-penny per pound. Complaints were made to Mr John Black by tlie Hospital Steward, that the meat was not suitable for the service required. I received orders from Mr Black to supply
the best of meat. Therefore, in sending in my account to Mr i'aplin, I charged five-pence per pound, which he objected to nay. Enclosed yon will find an account of meat supplied to the Hospital, charged at the extra pemiy-h df-penny per pound. —I am, &c. v William Oolsox. Referred back to tlie parlies themselves.
Proposed by Mr Dale, seconded by Mr Milne, and carried, “ That s in reply to leftcr from Hawera Road Board, re grant of £3OO, the Board be informed that the amount will lie paid when the conditions mentioned in letter dated 12th March are complied with. ’ Proposed by Mr Dale, seconded by Mr Gane, and carried, “ That Air Rogers be allowed, if he wishes, to resign his position as Foreman ot Works.”
Permission was given Air T. Haywood to erect hiticliing posts in front of his hotel.
Report of Foreman of Works read and received.
Proposed by Mr Ganc,. seconded by Mr Hunter, and lost, “ That Mr Thomas Twigg proceed to the Mountain Road, in company with the Foreman of Works, and the contractor (Mr McLean), to inspect the extras charged, and fix a fair price for the same.” Proposed by Air Dale, seconded by Mr McGnire, and carried, “ That if the Town Boards of Carlyle, Hawera, and Waverley, fill in portions of the County road between the gravelled' portion of the roads and the footpaths, this Council will coat the same with gravel.” Proposed by Air Ganc, seconded by Mr Hunter, and lost on division, “ That the County road be metalled the full width, whore any roads connect therewith.” Ayes—Hunter, Gane. Foes —Winchomb, Brewer, Partridge, Horner, Alilno, Dale, McGuire. Proposed by Mr Partridge, seconded by Air Horner, and carried, “ That where furze encroaches on the Comity roads, the Foreman employ day labor to clear the same, and keep an account of the expenses, so that it may be charged to settlers owning property where such furze is encroaching.” Proposed by Mr Hunter, seconded by Air Gane, and lost on division, “ That this Council grant the sum of £3OO to the Hawera Road Board, to he expended on the Alells and Ingahapi Roads, being part proceeds of the 20 per cent, on land soil for cash adjoining the above roads.” Ayes—Hunter, Gane. Noes —McGnire, Winchomb, Brower, Partridge, Horner, Milne, Dale. Proposed by Air Dale, seconded by Air Gane, and carried, “That Air Hunter bo requested to act in lien ol Air Winchomb, as a member of the Commit too appointed to inspect supposed breach of contract on Alonntnin Road.”
The applications for the office of Foreman of Works were then gone into, fourteen persons haring applied. Proposed by Mr Milne, seconded by Mr Horner and carried, That the application of Mr George Hardern, of Auckland, be accepted.
Tho Chairman was instructed to communicate with Mr Hardcrn, to make arrangements for ids taking office at tlie end of tho present month. Proposed by Mr Horner, seconded by Mr Partridge, and carried, “ That a Committee consisting of Messrs Milne, Dale, and tho Chairman, be appointed to advise and prepare estimates for the forthcoming year, to report at next meeting.” Accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
