At the Debating Society’s meeting on Thursday evening, Mr F. N. We shall cndovonr to print the essay in full in next issue. Messrs TVnncnt, Fairclongh, and Horner were opposed to Mr Malcolm’s arguments; and in order that the question should he fully ventilated, the discussion was adjourned, to bo brought up at any time the members thought fit. A meeting of those interested in the formation of a Fire Brigade for this town will bo bold in the Albion Hotel this evening. We hope that the meeting will not meet the same fate as others that have been called for a like purpose. In the event of a fire in the town, an organised body without a fire-engine would be of immense advantage, so wo hope that the matter will be taken in hand in a proper manner, and that the result will be the formation of a Fire Brigade.
We have received a letter from Mr Dale, condemning the action of the Carlyle correspondent of the Wanganui Herald , in attending a private meeting of Major Atkinson’s supporters, and publishing an account of same in the Herald , after being requested not to do so. The truthfulness of the report is disputed by Mr Dale. The letter was received too late for this issue, but shall appear in our next.
It will bo seen by reference to advertisement that the Carlyle District High School will be opened on the 18th instant. A teacher of high attainments has been secured as Assistant, and the teaching power will now be strong. It on!) 7 requires that settlers should second the efforts of the Committee to ensure thorough success, and secure permanently the benefits of high class education within the County. As books will have to be procured, and admission certificates obtained from Wanganui, before the school can be opened, we have been requested to urge parents to at once pay the fees, and select subjects from those named in advertisement, any or all of which will be taught as required.
