HAWERA.
(Telegraphed by Our Own Correspondent) July 25. Tab following telegram has been received by Mr Livingstone “ New Plymouth, 23rd July.—To Mr Livinstone and others, Hawera.—About three miles are-quite ready to be let in small piece-work contracts, viz., from Ohanga, running north ; and I have authority to commence work at once. Inform all who want work that an officer will be on the work on Friday next. — J. Rees, Engineer.” It is almost needless to add that (like all the promises of the Government) the commencement of the railway works has not
eventuated to-day. Luckily nobody expected it, so there has been very little notice taken of the telegram. A short time ago, when the ploughing was at its height, a few settlers and townspeople met for the purpose of hearing a telegram read that had arrived from Sir George Grey, about taking the Maori prisoners. The meeting decided to send a vote of thanks to the Premier for his telegram. It appears that Sir George has brought this telegram before the House, saying that the Hawera settlers had passed a vote of confidence in the Government. The indignation of the public wds great. A meeting has been held, and the following resolution was forwarded to Major Atkinson, to lay before the House ;—“That the vote of thanks passed by former meeting simply meant thanks for courtesy of telegram, and not approving of Government policy ; and tiiat this meeting distinctly express its want of confidence in the Grey Ministry.
