PARLIAMENTARY.
(Per Press Agency) WELLINGTON. July 11. Parliament was opened this afternoon by Commission, composed of the Hons Whitmore, Bell, and Richmond. On returning to the House of Representatives after reading the Commission, the Premier proposed that Mr O’Rorke be elected Speaker, referring to his qualifications in the most eulogistic terms. Major Atkinson seconded the motion, and speaking from a piersonal knowledge of twenty-five years Parliamentary life, endorsed all the Premier said as to Mr O’Rorke’s qualifications generally, but to his impartiality in particular while acting as Chairman ot Committees.
Mr O’Rorke was unanimously elected, and he returned thanks in feeling terms for the high honor conferred upon him. He hoped when he left the shair, the House would still be able to say of him what was said now. Mr Whitaker, speaking with fortyfive years experience as a member of Parliament, during which time he was always on the opposite side of the House to Mr O’Rorke, said he thought no one in the House was better qualified for the office, and ho congratulated him. After a brief acknowledgement from the Chairman by Mr O’Rorke, the House adjourned till Tuesday next, at two in the afternoon.
