WAVERLEY.

(From out own Correspondent.) July 8. The school re-opened on Honda}', with one hundred children. I believe the new ■master (Mr Scott) is well pleased with the 'children, and all arrangements, as far as he has seen up to the present. A party of twelve men of the Wairoa Light Horse fell. in on Saturday to escort •Maori prisoners to Wanganui, Captain Walkinton having received instructions to that effect from Major Roberts. On the arrival of the coach, however, no niggers were to be seen, And a telegram from Major Noako informed the Captain that no escort was required. Although of course mistakes of this sort must sometimes arise, ■and Volunteers quite understand as much, yeti think officers should bo careful to avoid as much rts possible putting settlers to the inconvenience of being called out for no purpose. The meeting re the formation of a Jockey Club, which should have been held at Ballam’s on Saturday, had to he postponed until Friday next, on account of a meeting of the Light Horse, which took •so much time that at its conclusion it was too late to commence another. The meeting on Friday is to be at 7 p.m.
