PATEA COUNTY COUNCIL.
The regular monthly meeting of the above body was held at the Council Chambers, Carlyle, on Wednesday last. Present—Messrs Dale, Gaue, Winchcomb, Horner, and Miine. In the absence of the Chairman, Mr Dale was voted to the chair. Minutes of previous meeting read and confirmed. Correspondence included—'Letter from Secretary Public Works, stating that a tender from Mr J. McLean had been accepted by the Native Department, for clearing an additional chain wide on Mountain Road and asking the Council to supervise the work; from Hawera Institute, that the £SO voted, by the Council
be paid at once; from the Maniopoto County Council, covering the following resoliuion, which was unanimously adopted by that body —“ That seeing the Chinese have now become so numerous, and are still increasing in this and other gold-field districts and centres of population, and are competing for and obtaining contracts on public works at such prices as none but Chinamen could exist upon, to the exclusion of the European labor (whose enterprise lias been in a great measure instrumented in making the colony what it is at present), in the opinion of this Council it is imperative that the Government should check their further influx. That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Government, and the members for the district; and that a circular letter be addressed to the various County Councils in the Colony, requesting their co-operation,” Proposed by Mr Milne, seconded by Mr Winehcomb, “ That this Council endorse the action taken by the Maniopoto County Council re introduction of Chinese into this colony.” On being put, the resolution was carried on the voices; but Mr Milne called for a division, wth the following result: Ayes: Gane, Milne. Noes: Wmchcomb (who voted in error, but claimed), Dale, Horner.
The Chairman, on behalf of the Council, undertook the supervision of Mr McLean’s contract on Mountain Road.
Proposed by Mr Horner, seconded by Mr Winehcomb, , and carried, “ That this Council hereby record their hearty thanks to Mr A, King and his colleagues, for their kind assistance to the Hospital fund, by their late entertainment,” Foreman of Works report read ; also report of Committee appointed to open and accept tenders for work on the Mountain Road, through Hawera.
The Council then went into Committee on tenders, when Mr S. Taplin’s tender for Hospital supplies was accepted ; also Mr H. I, Davis’ tender to erect a pound at Carlyle. On resuming’, .it was proposed by Mr Milne, seconded by Mr Dale, and carried, “ That Mr Rogers receive notice that his services as Foreman of Works will be dispensed with three months from the present date.” by Mr Horner, seconded by Mr Winchomb, and carried, “ Tint applications be called for a competent Foreman of Works, at a salary of £250 per annum; applications, with testimonials, to be forwarded previous to the next monthly meeting of the Council.
Accounts passed for the meeting adjourned.
