LOCAL DEFENCE.
The following telegraphic reply has been received by Mr Sherwood, in answer to telegrams sent by him to Government: “ Auckland, Juno 28. “ G. F. Sherwood, Esq., “ Patca. “ Major Noake is instructed to take any reasonable steps to place the magazine in a state ol defence, and to report as to Government Buildings. “ £ sincerely hope there may be no kind of danger to women and children, but it is right to bo prepared for all possible contingencies. “ Major Noake’s position, which you suggest should be made paramount, is practically as paramount as any Government can justifiably make it. It must be obvious that no Government can part with its own authority over its officers ; but Major Noake did command Volunteers of Wanganui District, and now has his district extended to Waingongoro, witlun wnich be is Commending Officer of Volunteers. “ Major Roberts Will arrive shortly, and command Constabulary on West Coast, and take charge of any operations required, should such unfortunately arise in the Waimate. “ You are to be congratulated on having two such officers on your coast. “ G. S. Whitmore.”
