How is this for truth ? The captain of one of our traders, in trying to make this port, says that he had to strike a match to find the lighthouse the other night.
Native rumours were at a stand-still on Monday, and so was the s.s. Patea somewhere. A rumor got afloat that tho abovementioned steomboat was aground on some part of the island unknown, and long and short telegrams from eager shareholders were flying around. It was pitiful to see the lengthened faces that wore displayed by local shareholders, and it even leaked out that some were anxious to dispose of their shares below cost price ; but, stay, a messenger arrives with the nows that the steamer is quietly anchored outside. What gladness prevailed instantly ; shares were hugged ; and a Director’s meeting held to know whether they could not insure the vessel against any more false reports. At a meeting of the Patea Amatuer Mtnstrols, held on Saturday evening (Mr W. Dixon in the chair), a balance-sheet was submitted by Mr King, showing the total receipts and expenditure in connection with the Hospital entertainment. The receipts amounted to £l9 2s, and the expenditure to £8 11s 4d—leaving, a balance to be handed over to the Hospital of £l2 3s 2d. Votes of thanks were accorded to Messrs Deane, Sherwood, and Connell, for their able assistance. The usual vote to* the chairman terminated the pooceedings. | Messrs M. D. King and Moore Hunter were nominated yesterday, at Hawera, for the vacant seat in the County Council for that Biding. ( The Taranaki Herald says—There is no doubt but the„ ensuing native meeting at Parihaka will be the largest one that has been held there for a long time. Natives are gathering there from all directions who do not usually attend the meetings. This is most likely caused by the effect produced on the native mind by the strong body of Armed Constabulary that has arrived in Taranaki, and the preparations which the pakeba has been making to be on the defensive in case of an outbreak. It is almost certain the natives do not intend to commit bloodshed, but they are actuated by a desire to know what the pakeha is about. The Carlyle correspondent of the Taranaki Herald says—A correspondent of the Wanganui Herald contradicts the statement about settlers being turned back on the Patea River. There are now reasons to believe that Read, one of the men on whose authority the circumstance was reported to the Government, either thoughtlessly or wilfully exaggerated. The fact,, however, remains, that they returned to town after being warned.
HIGH SCHOOL. The following circular from the Carlyl® School Committee is worthy of perusal: Carlyle, June 14. If a sufficient number of pupils are forthcoming, a District High School will be Established at Carlyle, commencing on the 7th The greater the number of Pupils which can be obtained to start with, the better will be the class of Assistant Teacher which the Board will provide. You, are therefore, in furtherance of this very desirable object, respectfully asked to reply, as early as possible, stating the number of pupils you can send, and the subjects you wish them to be instructed in.
The fee per quarter for each pupil will be 15s payable In advance. In addition to the ordinary school course of instruction, classes will be formed in Latin— French —Algebra—Euclid ; and, if required, in Greek and Trigonometry. Pupils entering for HigluSchool Privileges will have many advantages, and being under the immediate care of an efficient Master (who will have comparatively few pupils to attend to) will naturally make greater progress than would be possible in a purely elementary School, where the one teacher would have to instruct perhaps 50 or 60 pupils. To start with, -the extra classes will be taught in the present school buildings, but from the great interest which the Wanganui Education Board is .taking in this matter, there is every reason to believe that an extra class room will be erected immediately the attendance for the higher subjects is sufficient to warrant the outlay. The cost to parents in this District of sending pupils to the High School at Wanganui would not be less than £SO (including board) per year, whereas the fee for the proposed District High School at Carlyle will be but .£3 per year ; and children, out of school hours, will be able to remain with their parents. In order that the full benefits of high class' education may be secured at the moderate cost above-named, it will be necessary for parents to aid the Committee all they can by sending as many children for instruction in the higher branches of education as possible. Any further information required will be readily supplied on application to Mr William Aitchison (Chairman) or to James Kenworthy, Hon. Sec. Carlyle School Committee.
