(Per Press Agency.) WELLINGTON. June 17. Government have leased the Athen«mtn. At the Poli.oe Court, Squires, landlord of Metropolitan Hotel, was fined £lO for keeping open after midnight. The police saw people drinking there shortly before one. Watt, for stealing at the fire, received 14 days hard labor. Archdeacon Stock suggests that a permanent roll of the names of persons who distinguish themselves at fires in saving life, or other ways, should be posted in public places. The Ashburton Mail appeared to-day in an enlarged size—the largest broadsheet in the Colony. Borough Council have reduced day wages to 6s 6d, and increased the number employed, so as to find work for the idle. A farmer was to-day committed to trial on three charges of concealing and removing horses to defraud bis creditors, and obtaining money under false pretences. WESTPORT. June 17. D. R. Henry, member for Buller in House, narrowly escaped drowning near Lyell, having been thrown off his horse while crossing the river in the dark.
