The Waverley Institute being now an established fact, the Committee would be thankful for donations of books, &c. Mr 11. A. Arthur announces that he will open in the furnitue lino shortly.

The following notification, with reference to the Patea Lighthouse, appears in Gazette of Thursday last:—“ Notice is hereby given that, on and after Monday, the 9th June, 1879, a Harbor light will be erected on the eastern side of the Patea River. The Light will be a fixed red light, the apparatus being one of Messrs Chance Brothers and Co.’s sixth-order port lights. The light, which will show all round seaward, will be elevated about 133 feet above the level of the sea, and will be seen in clear weather at a distance of about five or six nautical miles.”
We have just inspected the plans of the proposed new Post and Telegraph office for Carlyle, from which it would appear that we are at last to be blessed with a respectable building. The present edifice .no doubt suited the purpose very well up to within the last two or three years; but nothing could be more inconvenient to the public now, and even the officials were heard to cry out against the pokiness of the building." The new office will have a double front —one facing the main road of 30 feet, and the other facing Stafford street of 37 feet. The public delivery will be entered form Taranaki Road, the lobby being 15 by 6 feet, fitted up with all necessary conveniences for post and telegraph business. There is also a private letter box lobby in Stafford street, but facing the main road, which will contain 66 boxes—this room is 15ft. 6in. by Bft. The accommodation for posting letters, &c. will be in Stafford street. A private room has been set apart for the Postmaster, 9ft. Gin. by 7 feet. The mail and instrument department is 22ft. by 36 feed; and will make a commodious room for telegraphic and mail work. The building is to be erected flush with the footpath, with no verandah. The front is to be of rusticated boarding, with windows of a neat pattern. The present office is to be removed to the back, and converted into a dwelling house, which, when fitted up, will be very comfortable.
The annual general meeting of the Patea Cricket Club, for the purpose of receiving the balance sheet, was held on Saturday last; Mr Taplin in the Chair. The balance sheet showed that the Club was £3 5s in debt. Messrs Fraser, Taplin, and Dixon were appointed a sub-committee to revise the Rules. It was resolved that Mr Jacomb be presented with a bat for the highest average. The question of improving the ground was discussed, but it was decided to adjourn the meeting till Saturday next, to obtain a larger attendance, when the matter will be fully gone into, A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the proceedings. Our Taranaki files announces that Mr J. M. Vivian has forfeited his seal in the Borough Council through not having paid his rates. Wanganui people have a clever musician amongst therb. According to the Herald “ Mr Homberg will perform a piano class, and will teach after * Logiers ’ system of counting.” At the R. M. Court yesterday, F. Mullen sued J. Levy for a debt of £6 13s. Judgment for plaintiff with costs.
