(Per Press Agency.) NEW PLYMOUTH. May 5. In the Snprsme Court, Geo. Haywood was found guilty of maliciously wounding a cow at Kotcinarae on the 25th October last, and sentenced to nine months' imprisonment with hard labor. Sir J. Goode’s plans and report of the New Plymouth harbor have arrived, and are in the hands of Mr Blackett. There is a report in circulatiou here that Hone Pihama,' a long-cried loyal chief, is’ leaning towards Te Whiti. There is good authority for stating that this is untrue. A great tangi was to take place at Parihaka to-day over Chief Tamihami, who was killed by a fall from a horse on Friday. Tamihana was lately gazetted assessor, and Te Whiti says he would not have been killed, had he adhered to him. May 6. Mr Aitkens has been appointed Borough Surveyor. At the Supreme Court this morJ*g v . Carl Gringal pleaded guilty to killing his half-brother, Ferdinand Paul, at Normanby, on 16th January last, and was sentenced to six months imprisonment with hard labor. AUCKLAND. May 6. News from Rarotonga, reports the loss of an American schooner in a gale at Scilly Island. There were 26 persons in all aboard. The Island is a barren sandbank, but they subsisted three weeks on their provisions, when they were rescued by the schooner Caroline Mada, and taken to Tahiti. The City Council are making preparations for the Governor’s reception. The Auckland Club also convened a meeting to consider proposal to entertain His Excellency at banquet. A young woman lias been arrested, charged with learing her infant on the foot-patii in Wellington street, wrapped in a blanket, with feeding bottle, last night. Poor Infant, when found, was soaked with rain. WELLINGTON. . May 6. Two brothers, named Maxstead, were brought up at the R.M. Court this morning, for not contributing towards the support of their aged father and mother. Evidence showed that one brother owned 200 acres of land, and 20 head of stock ; the other about 70 acres, and a lot of stock ; and that for years they had not contributed in the slightest degree towards their parents support, or even enquired as to how they managed to subsist. The Magistrate said it was the first case of the kind lie ever had in the colony, and sincerely hoped it would be the last. It was a disgrace to the colony to see men in the position of the Maxsteads allowing a crippled father and decrcpid mother to be neglected, and ordered each to pay 7s 6d per week towards the maintenance of their parents. One brother said, “ I can’t pay; f have not the means.’’ The Magistrate replied, “It is no use you saying that. The law is more powerful than s'ou, and will find a way to comoel you,” Information is to be laid against another brother not summoned. The Chief Justice, to-day, refused to consider an application by a bankrupt for sustenance out of his estate, until the question had been taken before the creditors: for their consideration - Hinemoa left at four this afternoon for Lyttelton, to bring back His Excellency. After leaving Lyttelton, the Hinemoa will convey Sir Hercules and party to Akaroa, where a few hours will be spent. Steamer will then come on to Wellington direct,, arriving here on Friday. Next sitting of Court of Appeal will commence on Monday. CHRISTCHURCH. May 6. Belfast Meat Factory destroyed by firethis evening; supposed totally.
