At a debate last night in the House of Lords, relative to Free Trade versus Protection, the Premier spoke on the subject, declaring that reciprocity, which meant reversal of Free Trade principles, was now simply impossible. Sir Garnet Wolsely returns to England from Cyprus for. the purpose of serving on Military Commission. Prince Louis of Ballenburgh has been elected to the throne of Bulgaria. The Two Thousand Guinea Stakes was won by Chariot, Cadogan 2nd, Hayondor 3rd.
At a meeting of the Liberal Party at Chelsea (Sir Charles Dilke, Chairman), Mr Berry, in reply to an address, said that he expected ulimately to see Australia independent. Australia was now more like a Republic than the monarchy of England. CAPETOWN.
April 8. The garrison which lately defended Ekowe, has arrived at Tugela. Lord Chelmsford and staff are going to Durban, the chief seaport town of Natal. It is reported the Zulus have occupied Ekowe.
Cetewayo lias retired beyond the Black Kinfotosa River, the centre ofZululand. The rumour of Boers retaining Sir Bartle Frere, is entiiely unconfirmed.
