ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

[We are at all times ready to give expression to every shade of opinion, but in no case do we hold ourselves responsible for the sentiments of our correspondents.]

(To the Editor of the Patea Mail.)

Sin, —I have no intention whatever of replying to the last effusion of “ Veritas” his language is altogether too coarse and intemperate for that; and besides, it is more than probable that his letter will form the subject ot a criminal action.

I merely wish to refer to the letter of <•' Sandy McPherson,” ami to express the deep regret that is felt amongst Mr McGregor’s numerous friends at so personal and unwarranted attack upon a private family. Mr McGregor has been well known throughout New Zealand during the last thirty years, and, to those who know him, his unblemished character, generous and kindly disposition, are so undoubted and noted, as to be proverbial. His retired, gentlemanly style of conducting his business, and repressing all demonstrations of everything verging on impropriety, do not suit some of the lowbred characters who are always prowling around a new and unformed country, which will obviously explain the dark and uncouth stabbing of such men as “ Bandy McPherson” ; therefore much sympathy is felt for Mr McGregor, and indignation at the unfeeling attack upon himself and his amiable family. Instead of “ The McGregor’s” pleasing strains, “ Sandy ” —as he calls himself—might soon find himself lugged off to limbo, and the logs (where he has probably spent no inconsiderable portion of his time), to the still more lively, expressive, and expeditions air of “ The Rogue’s March.”—l am, &c.,

AMICUS YERITATIS Normanby, May 2nd, 1879.
