The Patea Mail. (Published Wednesdays and Saturdays.) WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16, 1879.
In Inst issue wo published the opinions of the Press Agency's correspondent at Opnnake, with reference to the good impression Mr Mackay was making on the native mind, and the evil results of Mr Williams’ visits. Wo merely published those opinions to show our readers how the outside world was fed with nows regarding the present native difficulty. Mr Mackay’s influence with the natives is all moonshine, and the sooner he and Blake arc removed to a distance, the better. The correspondent referred to no doubt considers himselt an authority on native matters, but. he mast not think that because a man was once a laborer, and-earned bis bread honestly, lie is not now fit to take a position of tmst. Even the Maori, savage as he is, would be more inclined to respect a man of this class, than one who could do nothing but talk, not to mention anything worse. The best men of New Zealand are made up of those who once toiled hard for a living, and we say more honor to those who have reached positions of trust and importance such as Mr Williams has done. We think it a great mistake that anyone but Major Brown, assisted by Mr Wiliiauis, should have been authorised to do anything with regard to the Plains. Major Brown would have dealt fairly and firmly, but it is hard to say what is being done now.
