At the Police Court this morning, Joshua Jones, the Mokan settler, who resides at New Plymouth, charged Robert McMillan with having, at Mokau, on the Ist April, assaulted him with intent to murder. Case remanded to Thursday next, McMillan being held to bail in his own recognizances ; n JJ2OO. To Horo Whare and Horn Epiba, of Mokau, are subpoenaed as witnesses. H. Rawson, dentist, is dead. Twenty Armed Constables are to be placed at Okato. A Telegaph Station is to be opened at Stratford, and the Telegrapn Station at Okato, fit present special to the Government, is to be opened to the public. WELLINGTON. April 15. A fire broke out last night in Edwards and Co.’s bond, Lichfiehl-street, containing a large quantity of goods. The fire was kept from spreading. Origin as yet unknown. As far as at present ascertained, insurances are—New Zealand, £1000; Sun, £1000; South "British, £2000; Union, £2000; Standard, £2000; National, £2000; United, £500; Transatlantic, £IOOO ; total, £II,OOO. This is irrespective of buildings.
