Owing to no letter reaching us from our Ha" wera correspondent, wo take the following from' the Wanganui /Jerald’s telegraphic report of Mr Macandrew’s visit, which appeared in Wednesday’s issue : —A large and enthusiastic meeting was held last night in the Town Hall, Mr McGiiire in the chair. Resolutions carried unanimously— That the Hon. James Macandrew' be requested to use his utmost efforts in furthering the completion of the Mountain Road. That the meeting strongly urge upon the Government the expediency of at once .or gamsinga powerful and efficient force, and that in the meantime the Government be careful to avoid any action calculated to provoke hostilities. That tiie Govnerment also push on rapidly suclt Public Works as arc specially calculated to open tip lho country, ami can be proceeded with at the present time. The elected deputation waited on the. Hon. Mr Macandrew with these and other resolutions.
Mr Macandaew sffd lit- thought the second resolution was in accordance with the views ol : Sir George Grey. For his own part he thought the pushing on of Public Works was the most effectual way of settling the Native diffhailty, although he’confessedjan ignorance of native affairs. The following resolution was also’carried —That the Government be requested to reorganise the Taranaki Waste Lands Board, and that the Patea County have a fair share of representation in the new Board.
