HAWERA.

(from our own correspondent.) The Maori difficulty re the Waimate, is still the popular topic. Little knots of people gather together to talk it over, and every fresh person that arrives has some new bulletin to issue ; but nearly all the reports that are told one day are contradicted the next. The last that I have heard is that a certain Government gentleman went over to ask Tito Kowaru which he would have—Major Brown and the surveyors, or the Defence Minister ; the reply was prompt, and to the purpose, “ We will have Major Brown and the surveyors, and we will also cart them back again.” Of course if this is true, it will be very satisfactory.

The Cavalry Corps have been getting recruits hand over hand since the surveyors retired from the Plains, and I have no doubt some of them will be disappointed if there is no chance of a row.

An Acclimatisation Society meeting is convened for next Saturday, for the purpose of electing a President, Mr Cavcrhill having declined to- act. I hope to see a full team from Carlyle for the cricket match on Saturday next. It is very much more satisfactory for botli sides to play even. Of course we are sanguine as to the result. ’lho last two or three days of cold weather has had the effect of enquiries re the Football Club. I have no doubt in a day or two they will have a meeting. There are every hopes of a good team this season. Buildings arc still going up in all parts of the town, but the general complaint is want of timber. I believe Mr Uobson has some new machines on the road up, and he will then be able to supply about four times as much in a day as be does now. A meeting of the new Institute committee was held last Saturday evening. Finns of the building were produced, and I beiievo they are going to commence’ the building as soon as possible.
