HAWERA.
(prom ouk own correspondent.) R.M. COURT — -Monday, March 24. (Before C. A. Wray,. Esq., R.M,, and Capt. Wilson, J.P.) Seßgt. CaiiiiX v. Rakau and Te Repi, for being drunk and disorderly in the public streets of Hawcia on the 14th. Fined 5s each and costs, or 24 hours’ imprisonment. C, H. Beresfoid v. William Pollard, claim £5 6s 7d. Judgment for plaintiff. J. Whitmore v. P, Carey, claim Bs. Judgment for defendant. R, Lynch v. A. Broadbent, claim £9 Iss, for rent. Mr Farrington for plaintiff, and Mr Barleyman for defendant. Plaintiff stated that he had leased certain premises to defendant from the Ist of November last, had given him possession of the same, and handed him the keys. Defendant, on the other hand, swore that he had never had possession of the premises, but had frequently applied to plaintiff to give him possession, and was always refused ; also, that the keys had never once been given to him. Defendant’s daughter stated to having applied to plaintiff for the keys, and to being refused ; also, that the plaintiff had himself occupied the premises during the whole of the time for which he was claiming rent. The Magistrates decided that as the lease clearly gave defendant a right to take possession from the Ist of November,it was his place to do so, and, although the evidence was very conflicting, he must,'in the face of the lease, give judgment for plaintiff, but would withhold the execution for a week, to enable defendant to have a rehearing, should he be able to obtain any further evidence. Trustee of J. S. Greig’s estate v. Ollivier, claim £9 6s, for cash lent. Judgment by default for amount claimed and costs. Same v. George Hellier, claim £5 Is 9£d. Judgment for plaintiff. Same v. R. claim £43 2s Id. Mr Barleyman for plaintiff, and Mr Farrington for defendant. The Magistrate reserved bis decision in this case until next Court day. A meeting of settlers was lield at Owen s Hotel, Hawera, on Saturday 22nd instant, for the purpose of forming an Acclimatisation Society. The attendance was good, and the interest taken in the movement t>y those present, I think will guarantee its success. Mr J- S. CaVerhill was elected President, and I know very well that everything he does will be done well, so there
cannot be tbo slightest doubt that the righ 4 man is in the right place. The VicePresident is Mr C. McLean, one of the first to start the Society, and one of the oldest settlers in the district. The Committee is composed of the followinggentlemen i—Messrs Livingstone, F. H. Brett, G. T. I3ayly,.F. Finhiyson, D. Buchanan, J. Robson, A. Owen, M. Hunter, D. Carroll, F. W. F. Lukis, and T. Mason, with Mr J. Barleyman, as Hon, Tieasurer, ami Mr W. H. E. Wbanklyn Hon. Sec. A large amount of money was subscribed in the room, and I think when the people that were absent are asked, they will not refuse, as thev must sec what a splendid tiling it will be for the district, not only giving ns sport, but food, and beautifying our district with all kinds of plants and trees, &c., that are difficult to obtain except through these Societies. The Committee, I believe, intend having their first meeting as soon as possible, and the first thing they will do will be to get the fish into our rivers.
