ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE

[We are afcall times ready togive expression 10 every shade of opinion, but in no case do we hold ourselves responsible for the sentiments of our correspondents.] IMPOUNDING CATTLE. (To the Editor of the Patea Mail. Si it, —I see in the minutes of the Patea West Road Board, a resolution that they advertise for persons to impound cattle off roads that are fenced on both sides. Now 1 consider that this is very unfair indeed to ratepayers, as there has been a large amount of rates spent on roads which .are fenced only on one side, and the owners nave had ample lime to fence the other side. Then, why should cattle be allowed to do equal damage because the owner will not fence ? Is it because any of the members are in that fix the exemption is made, or why ?.—I am, &c., RATEPAYER. o— — A QUERY. (To the Editor of the Patea Mail.) Sir, —Is it because Mr George Marchant is a member of the Road Board, that his engagement with the Board re work on Ball Road-is not finished?-—Lam, &c., ONE THAT WANTS THE-ROAD. NEW WHARVES. ' (To the Editor of the Patea Mail.)

Sir,—l noticed in your last issue that tlie newly-elected Haihour Board-are veiy hppefn) of prospects generally.- I should have thought, Sir, this hope would have induced the members to go in for more substantial wharves, instead of patching up the old ones, as 1 sec they are doing with Hirst’s wharf; I was under the impression when the wharves were taken out of private hands, new and substantial ones would have been erected,-for there is not the slightest doubt it is required. The first outlay is always the-greatest, and it would cost less in the long run to erect a good wharf than to he continually patching up the old ones.—l am, &c„ NEW WHARF.
