WAVERLEY.

(From our own Correspondent.) The nomination of candidates to represent this Riding in the Patea Harbor Board, took place on Monday, when three gentlemen were nominated—Messrs Byrnes, Wincbcomb, and Sonthcombe. The poll is looked forward to with considerable interest, and of course great difference of opinion exists as to the merits of the calididates. Mr Symes is a favorite with many, while others object that he is likely to represent the Boiling Down Company to the prejudice of the other interests of the Riding. Mr Wincbcomb goes quite on the independent tack, pledging himself to nothing, but professing that while he will endeavour to do his duty faithfully by the district, he must bo guided by circumstances as to the particular line he may take in any one matter. Of Mr Southcombe nothing is of course known, so far as public life is concerned (except of course in his own house, where lie is most popular), but lie lias the Waitotara interest at his command, and it is thought that he will make a good show on Monday. St. Andrew’s Church now boasts of a bell, the congregation having, as usual* come down handsomely for that object. It summoned the faithful to worship for the first time on Sunday last, and its tone was much admired.

There is some talk of a company being formed for the . erection of a new Town Hall. It is to be hoped that it will bo carried out, as a ball is badly wanted here. I understand that a great number of persons have already signified their wish to take shares so soon as the scheme is fairly set on foot.
