The s.s. Patca is at last announced to sail from Wellington. The Manager (Mi I). M. Harris) left Carlyle for Wellington on Thursday last, for the purpose of formally taking the steamer over from the contractor. Site is expected here on Wednesday. with excursionists from Wellington. The Directors invite shareholders and their friends to meet them on board after her arrival.
Mr Bailey man, Collector of Customs, New Plymouth, has resigned his olllce Bathe purpose of joining Mr Hoy, of Hawera, in (he practice of the legal profession. Tenders are being called by the Taranaki County Council for the completion of the whole of the formation of the Mountain Road between Inglewood and Stratford. The s.s. Clyde is believed to have made her last regular trip to Paten, the cargo for this place all having been worked up, and outward freights being reserved for the new locally owned steamer. Captain Bonner, as well as being active, reliable, and obliging, and never missing a slant to work bis boot, has the proverbial seaman’s large-heai'teclness, and lias during bis late cciiiioetiou with Paten rendered good service to mariners in distress when disabled, and at other times by towing vessels in and out of the river lias won general good will and served the interests of settlers. We cannot say wo regret the discontinuance of the running of the Clyde, seeing that she is about being superseded by a 'better boat, but we do. with very many others, regret the loss from Bab-a of the curt, yet large-hearted and gonial Captain Bonner,
Mr W. Dale will hold sale of Stratford sections at Carlyle to-day. Also other properties and household furniture, including piano by Chailen and Hodgson.
Wo understand that Mr T. Dawson, telegraphist and postmaster, at Mountain, has been appointed to take charge at Waitotara, mi l will leave Mamuahi Cor that pm pose about the middle of next week. Mr (Josgrave, of the Patca station, wil; be placed in charge at. Mamilalii, whilst Mr 11. T. Bush, of Wellington, will supply the vacancy caused by Mr C’osgrave’s removal. MrDawsen,whoisatlioioiigh willing worker in any good cause, and has been a prominent member of the Mamilalii Entertainment and Debating Society, will be much missed. He lias also been conspicuous as a prize winner at athletic gatherings.
Tenders for gravelling main road will be received by the Patoa Comity Council until Tu sday next.
Tenders for the office of Foreman of Works, will he received by the Wairoa Highway Board, until noon this day. A meeting of D. Johnson’s creditors, will be held at Hawera, at 2 p.m. on .Monday. A public meeting for the purpose of d". iding upon the erection of a building for an Institute, will be held at Hawera, this evening, at 7.3J p.m. We shall bo pleased to lea nt iat the lukewarm!! ss referred to by on: Hawera correspondent as existing about this matter lias disaoappearod, and that the meeting will show liawerans up to boiling point.
Nominations of candid ites for election to the Paten Marlior Board will he received by the Returning Uffieers at Wavorley, Carlyle, ami Hawera, on Monday u-xt, the 3rd instant. Noniimrioiis must be handed in before noon in accordance with I tie terms of the Local Elections Act. Mr Joan Gibson is too may candidate who has announced himself. It is however reported that Mr J. W. Partridge will be nominated for Hawera.
A Hawera settler passing through Carlyle yesterday, reported that intlneiitial men at Hawera were endeavouring to get .Mr G. F. Sherwood to stand for the Harbour Board, for that. Riding. We think it would bo hotter for Hu worn to hav • a local man. In any case, nominations of suitable men should bo mule in all three ridings. It will bo very easy afterwards, for any who do not care to go to the poll , to withdraw Unless those interested in the progress of Harbor Works look out. they may find to (heir great surprise and chagrin, someone nominated and declared elected who wil! light tooth and nail against the Patea Harbour.
A covered conveyance, with large American and English Hags flying, ontoied Carlyle yesterday, containing T. G. Scott and his Star Company, who will perforin at Carlyle on Monday and Tuesday n xt, and at Hawera on Wednesday and Thursday. Scott made himself famous at Wanganui by his p’ucky travel on a wire rope in rougliisli weather across the river, and that too after a nasty fall through the shore end of the fixings not having been firmly secured. Twenty-nine applications for the Head Mastership of the Wanganui High School were received, and nine ladies for the post of Head Mistress. The following were selected :—Head Master—MrM. Fernley, M.A., late of Trinity College, Cambridge ; second master —Mr Charles Steadman, Victoria ; third master —Mr Watson, Wanganui ; head mistress—Miss Biylh, Principal of the Ballarat Ladies’College. The School Committee recommended that in the case of Mr West and Mra Cooper, the, present master and mistress, postsof at least equal value to those at present held by them should be conferred upon them by the Board.
