SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTION.
A meeting of householders was held in the Carlyle School Room, on Monday evening, between fifteen and twenty being present. Mr Gf. F. Sherwood was voted to the chair, and after a few remarks, read the report of the past year’s transactions, which had been prepared by the late Chairman of Committee (Mr Aitchison), in accordance with clause 103 of the Education Act. ’ :.< ' The report slated that during the year
f -ll 3s 3d had been received, and £37 Os JUd expended, leaving a credit balance of £C 13s 51. The School Fund for the ciuarter ending 31st December, bad not been received. The School Fund had been applied in the way directed by the Board’s rules and regulations, namely, in keeping in repair the buildings, fences, and grounds handed over by the Patea Education Board ; in supplying school requisites and furniture, and for lighting, heating and cleaning the school. £7O voted by the' Board for works recommended by the Committee, had been expended in erecting a dividing fence, across the play ground, with the necessary’ gates, a saddle shed, and other conveniences. A well had also been sunk, and a pump fixed. The improvements, all of which had been completed, added greatly to the comfort of tiie children, an'd to the better appearance of the school property. The Committee had been fully aware of the importance of tree planting in the school grounds- for shelter ami ornament, as alluded to in last report of the Education Board, hut for want of shelter for young trees, it had not been advisable to do so. The dividing fence which had been put up, together with the improved growth of the live boundary fences,would afford the shelter required, and enable tree planting to he commenced when the proper season arrived this year. Application had been made to the Board to establish a High School at ’Carlyle, under clause 55 of the Education Act, and full information on the subject had been forwarded in support of the application. The Committee during its term of office bad endeavoured to carry out the regulations of the ■Education Act, and. the instructions of the Board, as far as circumstances would permit, but the difficulty of getting work done had been very great, owing to the scarcity of labour in the district. A considerable amount of useful work had however been'accomplished. The teachers, —Hr Dyer and .Miss Williams—had always shown themselves most willing to comply with, or carry out, any instructions or suggestions received by them from the Committee, or which had been forwarded by the Board. The retiring Committee would be happy to supply any information in connection with the senoo! management which the Board might require. The report was signed by Mr William Aitchisou, as Chairman of the Heiiool Committee. Certificate of the correctness of accounts was read, from the auditor, (Mr W. Cowern). An item £1 -Is, passed for payment having been omitted, was carried forward to the next year.
The Chairman's Ileport, and Uoport by the Auditor, were received and adopted. On moduli of MrTaplin, seconded by Mr W. Dixon, a vote di; thanks was accorded io the retiring Comniittee. Nominations fur the new Committee were then made, ami a ballot taken resulting as follows : E. Tregear, 2-1 votes, \V. Aitchison, 22 ; James Kenworthy, 17 ; Samuel Tap--1 in, 11 ; I*. A. Adams, 10 ; W. Dixon, 8 ; \V. 1 lowilt, 8. A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the proceedings.
KAKAKAMKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE A meeting of householders was held in tim Kakaramea School House, on Monday evening, to elect a new School Committee. Very small attendance, only eleven householders being present, including live of the old Committee. Mr 11. Williamson was voted to the chair, and gave a report of last year’s proceedings. The Secretary then asked for nominations for the new Committee. Considerable relnetanecto stand was manifested. Eightgeuth;iiicii were at length nominated, three of whom were not present. A ballot - being taken, the following gentlemen were elected:— Frederick Martin Chapman, Thomas Delamore, Andrew limiter, Thomas Joseph Hindc, Joseph Haickcn, Janies Falerson , Henry Williamson.
There was a tie between Hawken and Clover. The Chairman gave his casting vote fur Hawken.
Tim names in italic were members of the ole Commitaee.
