(From oar own Correspondent.) Jnmiarv 7. Tub over-again hack race was ran on Saturday, and was won by Mr WTka, Mr Morton’s Annie taking place. Another race was got up on tkO ground— quarter of a mile straight run. Mr Morton’s Annie took the money.

Another funeral took place yesterday, making the third in the last week. Mr E. Hunt, of Okntuku, breathed his last on Frida)'. The deceased was well known and much respected in the district. His funeral was largely attended, the .Rev Mr Allsworth being officiating minister.

I hear more growling at the Highway Beard. It appears that tenders ware invited lor the office of valuator for the Board. One gentleman sent in a tender at the time specified, and was anxiously awaiting the result, when, he discovered another gentleman doing the work. The latter stated that he" had not tendered, but had, against his wish, been persuaded into the service by the Chairman. The tenderer complains of want of courtesy on the part of tho Board, in not refusing his tender in the usual manner—the proceedings of the last mooting of the Board not having been published: also of the farce of inviting tenders, and then going out of their way to press a non-tenderer to take the office. This is the story as told me, and I think it is pretty generally thought that the proceedings of the Highway Board are not always as open and above board as could be desired.

A child of Mr Wil cox’s, of Wuitotura, nu:l with a serious accident ou hnnday afternoon. A horse hr-longing to Mr Fisher kicked it. in the* head, and at first it was supposed that the child was killed. Fortunately the surmise proved incorrect, hut I hear that recovery is very doubtful.
