' The following Testimonials have been given : “ The History of the Sea” is an attractive title. 1 think thatthe readers of Goodrich’s book on the subject, published by Messrs Lyon, will find its contents amusing and instructive. Those who delight in illustrated works will be pleased with the numerous engravings explanatory of the letter-press. Henry Govett, Archdeacon of Taranaki. j&.t the request of the ISTewZealand Ag’ent of Messrs Lyon and Co., of Canada, I have looked into an exceedingly well bound volume of the “History of. the Sea.” Judging by the number and excellence of its engravings and the mass of information it seems to contain, I should regard the book as one well worthy of purchase and frequent perusal. F. W. Isitt, Wesleyan Minister, New Plymouth. Having looked through the “ History of the Sea,” by Dr Goodrich, I feel constrained to contribute my mite of testimony in favor of the work. It is a thoroughly good work and worthy of an abiding place in every household. To the reader it cannot fail to afford pleasure and impart profit, especially to the youth of this ago and of these Islands of the sea which we live in. The History contains 59 chapters, and each one is full of interesting instruction. Also the 285 illustrations employed are very descriptive. The pencil is to lend light to the pen, exposing fable imd exhibiting fact in striking contrast. I have much pleasure in recommending the book to all to whonvthe Agent may offer itM, Somes Breach, St. Andrew’s, New Plymouth,

“ History o£ the Sea,” by Goodrich and Howland, is really a serviceable book, and eminently conducive to an intelligent apprehension of many interesting and important facts. Its thousand and one stirring incidents of history, travel, and adventure, together with its numerous scientific facts and philosophic truths, presented in a smooth and flowing style, render it a work of deep interest alike to jmung and old among all classes of readers. The synoptical index which substitutes the antiquated preface greatly enhances its value. In fact it is a book for the million. W© opine that the publications of Lyon & Co. will speedily find a deservedly welcome place in many Australasian homes. John Standbin, Primitive Methodist Minister, New Plymouth. Bishop’s Court, Auckland, March 15, 1878. Bishop Cowie begs to thank Mr Lyon for a copy of the “ History of the Sea,” published by Messrs J. W. Lyon and Co. The Bishop has not been able to do more than glance through the volume, which seems to be full of information. Th© binding, type and paper of the book are certainly good. ff * The “ History of the Sea,” by Dr Goodrich, is the most complete and comprehensive work on the subject which has ever come under my notice, being a vast treasure of deeply interesting knowledge. It is beautifully bound, and elaborately illustrated. As a presentation volume, this artistic book is most suitable and valuable. William Kirk, Ex-President of the W csleyan Conference, , New Zealand. I have examined the work called “ The History of the Sea,” published by J. W. Lyon and Co., and have found it all that the title page declares it to be : A graphic description of maritime adventure, achievements, explorations, discoveries, and inventions. It is a very interesting work, containing a great amount of information, given in such a way as to render the volume highly attractive and useful, especially to the young. The book is got up in a handsome and durable style, and will form a valuable adiitionto the family library. E. F. Macnicol, Minister St. James’ Presbyterian Church, Auckland. The “ History of the Sea," by Goodrich and Howland is, both in plan and execution, very superior to those of Kingston and Ballantyne. It is romantic in its narratives, and yet truthful in its details. I know of no book of the character that I would mere readily put into the hands of young people. E. Maunsell, Achdeacon of Auckland. The Eev. S. Chastagnon (Catholic Priest) authorises Mr Eeid to state that he thinks well of the book entitled “ The History of the Sea,” and that he believes it to be a very instructive publication. 1183
