WAVERLEY.

(From our own Correspondent.)

The School Committee held their meeting 1 on Wednesday last. Messrs Mason (Chairman), Thurston, Cheyne, and McDonald were present. Proposed by Mr Thurston, and seconded Mr Cheyne : —That Messrs Swinburne and McParlane’s tender for additions to the schoolmaster's residence be accepted. Carried.

There being only one tender for the erection of the dividing fence on the School ground, and that being considered too .high, by the Committee, it was resolved To extend the time for receiving tenders for a fortnight. On the motion of Mr Thurston, seconded by Mr McDonald, it was lesolved : —That the Chairman be requested to make arrangements for a provision of firewood for the ensuing winter 1

A sum of money has been raised locally for the purpose of getting prizes to be awarded to children who have passed the different standards. The prizes are to be given at the breaking up of the School for the Christmas holidays. Mr Fouliss examined .the School children on Saturday, The Chairman of the Kohi Committee has thought it advisable to close the Kohi School for the present, in consequence of fever being prevalent in the neighbourhood, A meeting was held on Wednesday last, for. the purpose of starting a Good Templar’s Lodge here. The attendance was small, but several subscribed their names. Last year a similar attempt was made, and fora time promised success ; but I fancy there has been a falling away since that time, and I think that even the honorable teetotaller who lectured so ably on the subject here last year, wouldhave to lax his eloquence to the utmost to make Good Templarism popular at Waverley, Crops are looking well about here, and with fine weather we may reasonably hope for a plentiful harvest. Further news as to the intentions of the Government with regard to Hiroke are anxiously looked forward to. People are beginning to think that this scarcely a safe place to live in, with the characters that are at present allowed to be ot-large in it—-Hiroki and others.
