The Patea Mail. (Published Wednesdays and Saturdays) WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1878.
Telegram received in Carlyle yesterday, mentioned that the Hon Mr Sheehan had left New Plymouth, and lhat he would be at Carlyle this (Wednesday) evening. Mr Sheehan lias been very much deputated in New Plymouth, and on the most various subjects. Amongst other things he has been asked to use his influence to have sale of Waimate Plains at New Plymouth. As wo said last issue, this is shortsighted greediness on the part of Taranaki, and would result in loss to themselves, as the heavy haul they make out of Patea Land Fund, for New Plymouth Harbor and the railway to Opunake, would thereby be considerably lessened. The coach from here to New Plymouth can only carry about eight passengers, and, unfortunately, through money voted for the Mountain Boad having been held back last year, that route even for horse riders is and is likely to be nnavailadlc. There is no certainty that if a steamer or a number of steamers •were specially sent to New Plymouth about the day of sale, that a landing could be effected. We have no doubt the Native Minister is fully aware of the absurdity and loss to Government and all concerned which would follow holding the sale at New Plymouth. Carlyle being about midway between Waimate and Momabaki stands well as the place of sale. We have no objection to Hawera. We want to see
a good class of settlers secured, and the highest prices realised. Save us from New Plymouth and all the other covoters. This and other matters should bo laid by an influential deputation before Mr Sheehan.
