Mr Thomas Haywood, of the Patea Brewery, having purchased the cordial business hitherto carried on by Mr James Lett, has had the plant removed to the brewery, near the Patea bridge, where there is an excellent supply of water, together with all appliances necessary for carrying on an extensive trade. We understand that Mr Lett has been appointed agent for the Kakaramea Saw Mill Company, and is intending to open a timber, firewood, and coal yard. A six-horse power steam engine will shortly arrive, which will be used for cutting chaff, firewood and-for other such like purposes. The following telegram was received by the County Council, on Wednesday, with reference to burying the man who had died, in the Hospital, the clergyman not being able to attend:—“My horse knocked up. Please bury the man yourselves.”—We understand that no communication whatever had been made to the priest by or for the man during his illness, and that the clergyman scarcely considers it his duty to attend the funeral of anyone not sending for him when in a state of dangerous illness. A very important sale of stock, implement ß and household furniture, will be held by Mr William Oowern, on Tuesday next, at the residence of Donald Coutts, Esq., near Carlyle. Mr J. Cunningham, of Hawera, notifies his removal to premises next Lloyd’s Hotel, where he has opened up a splendid lot of boots and shoes. Mr James Davidson has been appointed Hawera Agent for Mr F. R. Jackson, and will in future receive entries for cattle to be sold by auction, Mr Calvert, master of the Ketch Agnest which vessel bound for Patea, is now lying at Wanganui, having heard of the bad state of the Patea bar, came up by coach on Monday to inspect it before venturing here with the vessel. He left for Wanganui again yesterday morning, expressing himself as quite satisfied so long as the baa 1 remains as at present. He will take the first slant of wind to get here. Another very satisfactory land sale has just taken place at Hawera. Messrs McLean and Co disposed of 81 sections, the property of Mr Bamford at an average of £57 per acre, every lot finding a purchaser. Other valuable properties are now offering by the same firm. This day Messrs Thomson and McGuire will offer for sale in the Hawera Town Hall, 43 sections known as the Normanby Extension, in the centre of which site for railway station and other Government offices have been accepted by Government. On, the plan of the sections, is a tracing of the county, showing the routes .of roads, and line of railway, and the positions of the various Townships. A portion of the Block is being offered for sale at Hawera, the balance will be sold in Wellington. At the R. M. Court, yesterday, before C. A, Wray, Esq., R.M., T. Haywood sued J. Lyttle for £5 ss. Defendant had filed his schedule. —Sergeant Whelan summoned W. Odgers under the Licensing Act, for refusing to supply a native traveller with food. Adjourned to .TthDecetuber, defendant to pay cos t Si —Constable Shiel summoned W. Odgers, for selling liquors in prohibited hours. Case dismissed. —W. Williams,-for allowing two head of cattle to wander, was fined 2s 6d head and costs.

The Licensing Court will be held at Carlyle on Tuesday next. Installation of officers of Patea Kilwinning Lodge, will take place this evening. Banks will be closed to-day, being St. Andrew’s Day. At a meeting of shareholders on Tuesday last, Mr D, M. Harris was appointed Manager of the Patea Steam Shipping Company. Letter from Kimble Bent, which we have been permitted will appear in next issue.

The Hon. Mr. Sheehan is expected in Patea on Monday.

’ Tenders for works >on Little Taranaki road will be received by the Patea East Road. Board until Monday. We call special attention to the effort now being made to establish a public library at Waverley, The Committee are all in thorough earnest, and will do their share towards carrying on to a successful issue. Money of course will be thankfully received, whilst donations of books will also be equally acceptable. We trust there will be hearty response in cash or books, or both. The Bazaar in aid of the Carlyle Harmonic Society, has been postponed until Wednesday and Thursday, the 11th and 12th December. Mr A. C. Fookes has been elected Mayor of New Plymouth.

The Wanganui Education Board met on Wednesday and Thursday last, little of interest to this end of the district being transacted. We will give summary next issue. The “ Chronicle ” mentions that in accordance with the provisions of the Education Act, Messrs Fox,. Sanson, and Williams, were ballotted out at the meeting of the Education Board.

For land tax purposes, Patea has been included in the Wellington District, which comprises the Hutt, Manawatu, Patea Eangitikei, Taranaki, Wairarapa East, Wairarapa West, and Wanganui,
