The following are some of the changes which have been made in the Civil Service Department—Mr Batkin, of the Treasury, has been appointed Assistant Controller, and Auditor ; while Mr McG tvin takes Mr Batkin’s place as Accountant of the Treasury. Mr Hey wood has boon made Accountant tinder the Land Tax Department, of which Mr Spotty is to be Chief Commissioner. Mr McLean, Provincial Auditor, has been appointed to the SnbCoinmissionership of Auckland. Mr Watson, Government Auctioneer, has been appointed to the Snb-Commissionership of Otago. Mr Mackay, Commissioner of Native Reserves, has been appointed SubCommissioner at Nelson. The valuations under the Land Tax Act will begin early in December, and it is understood that the tax will be ready for enforcement in January. November 22. Re telegram dated London, November 19th, respecting a deputation waiting upon Lord Beaconsfield, Reuter telegraphs that it should read after the words “ Parliament will meet”—Parliament would he communicated with in conformity with the Indian Act. by which questions of this nature might be submitted to the Legislature within three months after hostilities had commenced. An extensive limestone cave has b-en discovered near the white cliffs,- between Westport and JReefN n. The explorer describes it as a magnificent sight when illuminated. A creek traverses the cavo yielding good payable gold prospects.
