HAWERA.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) R.M, COURT— Monday, November 18. (Before C. A. Wray, Esq., R.M., and CaptWilson, J.P.) Constable Crozieb v Ngahina for being drunk on Monday, the 6th. Fined ss, and 6s 6d coats. Captain Marshall v John Perkin, for being drunk in the streets of Nonnanby. Fined 5s and costs, or 48 hours’ imprisonment with hard labour. A practical proof has just been given of the insecure state of our lock-up. The prisoner Hunningham, who was committed for trial for horse stealing, made his escape a few nights since, b> wrenching off the lock with his hands, and has, so far, completely baffled ail attempts at his recapture. It has been a common boast with prismers that they could leave the lock-up at any time, and obtain a drink at the hotel and return to their quarters, without their ; absence ever being discovered. The circus last week drew crowds from all parts, about £l6O being taken in the two nights. Great disappointment was expressed at the riding, many of our youths offering to back themselves against the professionals. Thegymnastic performance, however, was fully appreciated. As a great deal of speculation has been going on as to the probable route of the railway, I forward copy of letter received by Mr T. Middleman in reply to the resolutions forwarded from the late meeting, which is as follows : “Public Works Office, Wellington, “November 6ih, 1878. “Sm, —1 am directed by the Hon. the Minister for Public Works, to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 2 4th October, in reference to the route of the railway near Hawera, and in reply, to inform you that the officer in charge of the survey has received mstrnetiuna'to lay off the line as near to Havvera as practicable, consistent with obtaining a good site for a station, and other necessary adjuncts. “ I have, &c., “ John Knowles, “ Under-Secretary for Public Works. “ T. Middleman, Esq., “ Chairman Public Meeting. Hawera.”
