The Patea Mail. (Published Wednesdays and Saturdays) SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1878.
As one means of reducing the Borough taxes, the Wanganui Herald suggests that application should be made to Government for 2,000 acres of Moma haki land, now being surveyed, and argues that considering the readiness with which the Wanganui Harbour Endowment was granted by the Assembly such a request should readily bo assented to. Such impudence is utterly astounding. Surely the Herald might have suggested the taking of some land within its own County instead of encroaching or Pn '.-'a, which as we lately pointed has hud to furnish endowments for almost every imaginable purpose under the sun —public and private. The Assembly refused a paltry grant of land for Patea Harbor though a grant to Wanganui was r idily assented to. Paten County has, this last session, been robbed ol 15 per cent., of its Laud Fund, uni it is no fault of Wanganui members that Aiomuhaki land was not secured for school purposes. We-thrive no objection to outside admiration of our fertile land, but this wholesale filching, and desire to filch, is unbear-
able. tVe suppose the Herald goes on the principle of making the best possible use of the friend at Court, before the order to walk comes. Here Patea stands at the fag end of two electoral districts, the members supposed to represent it having other interests to serve, and caring scarcely a jot for the place, and if willing, quite unable to stop the seizing of land and land revenue. This state of affairs can only be terminated by selecting a local man as representative in Parliament, It is quite time that all efforts should bo directed to this end.
