WANGANUI SCHOLARSHIPS.
At the last meeting - o£ the Education Board, a committee, which had been appointed at a previous meeting - to inquire into the question of Scholarships, brought up report, which was amended and adopted as follows : Clause 1. It was resolved on the motion of the Chairman thatthescholarshipsshould be open to the Board’s pupils only. Clause 2. As to ages and the annual value of scholarships was, on the motion of Mr Sanson, amended to read, Two scholarships for children under ten years of age, £lO each ; under twelve, £l2 10s ; under sixteen, £ls; under nineteen, £25. Mr Duthie objected to both the original clause and the amendment, and ona divlsion recorded his vote against, thooFher members supporting Mr Sanson’s amendment. Clause 3. It was resolved that the scholarships be held for one year. Clause 4. It was resolved that the subjects for examination be—For £lO scholarships, as per standard 4 ; for £l2 10s scholarships, as per standard 5 ; for £ls scholarships, as per standard 6 ; for £25 scholarships, the subjects prescribed by scholars’ certilicate examination. Clause 5. As to the minimum proportion of marks, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Peake, that the Inspector prepare a suitable examination for scholarships, taking the standards as a basis, but to modify the present system of marks, so as to give every candidate a fair chance of obtaining the minimum in each subject, by reducing the minimum to 25 per cent. Clause 6. On the motion of Mr Sanson, it was resolved, That pupils obtain 120 marks at the ordinary examination to compete for scholarships. Clause 7. It was resolved that the total number of marks be 200.
