(Per Press Agency.) WELLINGTON. October 8. A letter from Judge Richmond to the Colonial Secretary, was tabled last night, in reference to the case of Mr Barton, and the Judicial Commissions Bill. The letter concludes —“ It is not possible for anyone to understand how thoroughly without ground of complaint Mr Barton has been.” AUCKLAND. October 8. The Hero arrived to-day, having left Sydney on the 2nd. The" Torres St'-aits mail brings London dates to 17th August, of which the following is a summary:— The 'Times thinks that English interests in Afghanistan are safe. Shere Ali must be taught to respect us, and if Russia keeps England watchful over India, it will do good. The Circe, with a cargo of flour from New Zealand, reports tnat while stranded on New Guinea the vessel was plundered by natives. Six companies, with a capital of four millions, have been formed in London for speculations in Cyprus. A convention has been signed with Turkey for the Austrian occupation of Bosnia, but recognises the authority of the Sultan.
Turkey maintains right to carry out its own reforms in Asia Minor.
