Carlyle is the County Town of the Patea County, and is situated on banks of the Patea River, the outlet for the Patea District—a district second to none in New Zealand. River improvements and a breakwater at the entrance are now being carried out under the direction of the Harbor Board. Direct communication with Wellington will shortly be accomplished, by means of a steamer uow being built by Mr E. W. Mi,ls, of Wellington.
