Competition for cattle lias been very good for the pa*4 fortnight—all offered finding purchasers at extreme prices. Beef is very fcarce ; long prices conlcl be obtained readily for prime quality if it was procurable ; even medium, quality is difficult to get. the district being completely cleared out. At the St. Hill Street yards to-day, the beef was of indifferent quality, but commanded good price-. S‘orc cattle were in supply, every pen being full. Some lots were passed in at the auction, but were sold afterwards at prices satisfactory to the vendor. The sheep pens were also well filled with sheep of fair quality, considering the season. They were all sold either at the sale or afterwards. At Ilawera. on Friday, 6th September, the tide drew a large number of buyers—a capital sale being the result. Mr Middleman' cows were keenly competed for, and realised beyond the vendor’s expectations. The other stock offered sold well. Cattle—At ilawera ISO head were .sold. Ordinary cows, £6 5s to 416 7s (id ; yearlings, MH 13s; Mr Middleman’ cows, unbroken. £7 15s ; broken-in cotvs. in calf to pure-bred bull. £7 7s 6d to £ls 7s 6d —average, £9 2s 6d. At the St. Hill Street yards to-day, 173 bead were yarded. Fat bullocks, £8 2s 6d to £8 12s 6d i cows, £7 2s 6d ; store bullocks, £7 5s to £7 7s 6d ; cows in low condition. £3 5s ; mixed steers and heifers, £5 2s fid. Sheep—At the yards to-day. 73!) were penned. Best wethers, IDs ; sheep of lighter weight, 15s to 15s fid. T’igs—A few porkers. 14s 3d. Horses-—About 20 made up the sale. Hacks, good, £l4 10s ; inferior, £5 to £8 Is (id; draught animals, up to £32 10s. Exports—lo cattle and 200 sheep.
