(Per Press Agency,)' CHRISTCHURCH. September 6, A grand banquet came oft last night, 200 guests being present. The Mayor of Christchurch was in the chair, supported on the right by the Governor of New Zealand. llis Excellency replying to the toast of his health, said this was the close of first act of the great Public Works policy introduced into the country by Sir Julius Vogel, and no one remembering 1870, but would admit that the policy had been a great public sue,cess. The chairman announced that it was proposed on the following day to send a telegram,-congratulating Sir Julius Vogel upon the completion of railway between Christchurch and Dunedin. A blood gelding named Cambills, four years old, arrived yesterday by the Albion. He is the winner of several races in Victoria, and comes to run in the Jockey Club Handicap. He arrived in splendid order.
