MANUTAHI.

(from a correspondent). September 3. Admirers of football here, expected a treat on Saturday, 31st ult, in the shape of a match between the Hawera and Waverley clubs. Every preparation was made in a field belonging to the hotel, but the early part of the day turning out wet, the Waverley men did not show up. Hawera mustered strongly, and a scratch match took place, in which some splendid play was shown. Evidently the Waverleys would have found it a tough matter to dispose of them. In the evening, a public meeting was held in the Blockhouse, to receive the statement of accounts between the Government and the guarantors of the Telegraph Station here. The accounts from Bth June 1877, to 30th June 1878, showed : Expenditure—Salary of operator, £140; Passage, coach fares, etc., £8 ; firing, light, freight, and stationery, £l7 10s 6d; interest on furniture, fittings, instruments, batteries, etc, (valued at £01) at 6 per cent., £5 9s 2d : Total, £l7O 19s Bd. Receipts—Total cash receipts, £56 19slld; value of Government messages, £5 7s 4d ; Salary as postmaster, £lO 16s 8d ; leaving balance due of £97 15s 9d. The guarantors were, therefore, requested to remit the amount guaranteed, viz., £BO. It was resolved to hold a meeting to receive the money, which will then be forwarded to Wellington. Considerable

dissatisfaction was expressed re the iteni “ salary of operator,” and steps will bo taken towards endeavoring' to have the item lowered in future. A hearty vote of thanks to the. chair, brought the business to a conclusion.
