The New Zealander■ of the 30th August says :—Among other provisions of the rules ami regulations for, the guidance of the Education Board, is a new scale of payment, by which teachers are to receive a large increase of salaries, though, not exactly at a uniform rate. The salary of a third-class certificated teacher will commence at £l4O, instead of £l2O, as heretofore. The allowance for rent to head teachers in town schools lias been raised to £SO, and, in addition to the increase by scale, a bonus is offered for results, providing the funds will admit. The amount is 5 per cent, on the stipends of all teachers abo.ve the rank of pupil teachers when 80 percent, of lho possible passes in the school are made, 24- per cent, additional when 90 per c. nt. arc made, and a further 2\ per ; cent, additional when thorough instruction is given in two special subjects. This subject of a bonus is quite new. Piiz.'s in future will be given for the passes in standards 4, 5, and G, and in the scholars’ certificate examination, irrespective of the age of competitors. According to the present rules, four hours’ instruction must be given in secular subjects, and instruction must also be given for one hour in any subjects at the discretion of the local committee, and under the direction of the Inspector.
