WRONGS TO BE RIGHTED.
(To the Editor of the Patka Mail.) Sir, —The thanks of everyone in (lie Patea County arc due to the writer of a letter signed “ Vigilans,” which appeared ii's your last issue, in re the spoliation of our c.unity, and also, indirecly, calling attention to the miserable abortion named ‘‘Counties,” and “Local Self Government.” Sir, I lake it that, though not over sanguine at the time the measures n ere brought forward—yet [ bowed to the majority and looked on flic new institutions as a simple plain, which required nurturing, weeding, and priming—hoping for success I watched, and found, to my sorrow and disgust, that the whole arrangement, so far as Patea is concerned, is a mockery, a delusion, a smue. Imprimis—Wo are mt represented in Parliament, as part of our county is tacked on to Wanganui, the other part is tacked on to New Plymouth, thereby dividing us and strengthening them.
Second —Education. Why, sir, have we not a Board of Education for our county, instead of having to trust to Wanganui for anything required hero, Wanganui having a majority on the Board. Third—Survey office to be removed to New Plymouth, though, by way of a sop, we are to have a sort of an office boy here, who, doubtless, will have to continually refer to bis master at New Plymouth, oa any question of importance. Fourth—Waste Lands Board. Composed of some very respectable men at New Plymouth, not one of whom knows anything of the Patea Waste lands, and on all occasions have to apply to one person in this comity for advice—l had almost said instruction. Fifth—Chief Engineer. A New Plymouth man, whose proclivities are entirely at that end of the Provincial District, i. Sixth—Registration of Deeds. Musffje done at New Plymouth, or, at least, a large portion, and the remainder, cither at Wanganui, or elsewhere out of the county. Seventh —Payment of Licenses. Must be paid for, one portion at New Plymouth, the other portion at Wanganui. I will lastly refer to the wholesale raid on the revenue derived from our land, but will not dwell on that painful subject, as “ Vigilans,” and your footnote will explain it. I should take it as a great favour if some of your readers would explain some or all of the above, if possible. Having pointed out the disease, let mo' now attempt to produce a remedy. Firstly I would suggest a temporaly if not total cessation of local and petty personal jealousies. Secondly, as we have no Representative in Parliament, let us appeal to' the Premier himself, not by Deputation, but by a Monster Petition, signed by, I hope, every person in the district, or, I should say, county. Such Petition to be carefully worded by a cotnraitttee appointed by a public meeting, or, self appointed. Let said Petition be taken round to every house in the county for signature, by trustworthy paid agents, and forwarded direct to Sir George Grey (the Premier) through County Council, the costs of such agents to be paid by public subscriptions, towards which I authorize you to guarantee one from me not exceeding one pound. If necessary a deputation might convey the Petition, though I do not see the force of it. Hoping this appeal will meet with sponso, —I am, &c. NEMO.
